History Lesson
Back in the day … people left their homes to go to an arcade or a place that had arcade machines to play video games. To play a game, you needed to insert a coin into the machine. Quarters were the most common coin used … some places required that you to trade your real money into custom coins that their machines accepted. When you ran out of lives or continues in a game … you either stopped playing that game or inserted a coin to continue. If someone was going for a high score, they would line quarters up on the machine. This served two purposes. First the quarters were easy for the player to grab and secondly, it was an indication to other players that that game might not be available to other players for a while.
